Terry Owens, founder of InBiz, which helps individuals and groups to develop enterprise skills, was judged 2008 Overall Champion Enterprise Supporter at the SFEDI Advisory Body’s Enterprise Support Awards on 17 April 2008.
He received the prestigious award in recognition of his achievement in founding InBiz, which has so far helped more than 20,600 people move off benefit by setting up their own business. Over 80% of those InBiz has helped are still trading after two years, proving the success of the type of support and advice offered by Terry and his InBiz colleagues, according to SFEDI. He received the award from Martin Balaam, CEO of ICT solutions provider Redstone plc, lead sponsor of the gala event, held at BAFTA in London.
QED Consulting, the Doncaster-based people development organisation, was among the other award winners, collecting the award for Enterprise Champion – Product or Programme, for the successful Entrepreneur Schools it has run in three UK regions. Paul Davies, founder of Clowne Enterprise and Bizfizz, was the Enterprise Champion – Support Professional. Help given by Paul has helped create 70 new businesses and 80 new jobs.
Nottingham Business Venture won the Enterprise Champion – Corporate award for its work to create innovative business environments, including virtual tenancies, and Avanta Enterprise Ltd, which owns InBiz was runner up in this category for its work to bring employment and skills development to local communities through its regional offices.
Tony Robinson, SFEDI Founder and Executive Director (www.sfedi.co.uk), whose Advisory Body hosts the Awards, said: “Yet again our judges had a difficult task as the calibre of entries was so high.
“What struck them was the dedication of those who underpin the UK’s start up community and their willingness to constantly evolve new, often highly innovative models for delivering training, support and know how.
“This work goes on every day across the UK and is often unheralded despite the huge contribution played by advisers, accountants, mentors and all those who support entrepreneurs and small business owners in helping to maintain a strong enterprise-driven engine room for our economy.
“Wobbles in the big business community are a stark reminder of the importance of investing in the next generation of businesses and business owners to ensure they survive and thrive. Those providing support to these brave souls are the unsung heroes of the UK business community and we hope our awards help to redress the balance.”
The Enterprise Support Awards, which were hosted by the SFEDI Advisory
Body, showcase excellence among individuals and
organisations providing support to the UK’s entrepreneurs and small businesses. Former ‘Apprentice’ Tim Campbell and Kevin
Horne, Chair of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies were among those
presenting the awards.
Commenting on his award, Terry Owens said: “I am extremely proud and humbled to receive
this prestigious award which, I believe, reflects the dedicated work of the
whole team at InBiz.”
