Preparing for Business Abroad

1. Contact the embassy in Britain of the country you are visiting.

2. Find other sources of information on the country such as the Department of Trade and Industry and the Internet.

3. Learn about the country's languages, geography, society and history.

4. Check whether you need a visa and if needed, allow plenty of time before your trip for one to be arranged.

5. Check on the public holiday dates of the country that you intend visiting to avoid a wasted trip.

6. Find out which currency you should take and order it in advance.

7. Find out which credit cards are accepted in the country and how and where they can be used.

8. Find out about the local culture and customs to avoid offence.

Do:

Learn a few everyday phrases in the language of the country to which you are travelling.

Look at books intended for tourists - they often contain information not found elsewhere.

Be prepared to produce your passport when changing money.

Don't:

Assume that customs and practices will be the same as your own.

Get too much local currency at once.

Express your opinion on the country's internal politics.
