Setting Up An Emergency Management Scheme

1. Create an energy management committee from all levels of your organisation.

2. Decide whether to concentrate on one site or building or to concentrate on one type of energy usage.

3. Analyse the energy costs of your organisation.

4. Try to compare your organisation's energy usage figures with those of a similar organisation.

5. Conduct an energy audit to determine the way in which your organisation uses energy.

6. Analyse the results of the audit and make any modifications or improvements highlighted.

7. Inform employees of the benefits of the scheme.

8. Train employees in energy reduction methods.

9. Evaluate the results of any changes that have been made.

10. Keep looking for further ways to improve the organisation's energy management.

Do's and Dont's:

Do:

Consider using an outside energy management consultant.

Ensure all employees are aware of the importance of energy use reduction.

Take into consideration the energy efficiency of any machinery or equipment the organisation intends to buy.

Implement a system of regular maintenance and servicing

Don't:

Forget to keep all employees informed of the results of the scheme.

Think of the energy audit as a one-off event - continue to look for improvements.
