S15 Rural and Land-based Business

Rural businesses make a major contribution to the economy, but face particular constraints: distance from markets and services, gaps in digital connectivity, limited transport, planning and grid capacity, a shortage of housing for staff, and difficulty accessing finance. Farm and land-based businesses are also adapting to changes in farm support and to new markets for environmental goods and services, and many are family businesses where the household, the land and the business are closely linked. This Standard is about supporting rural and land-based businesses in ways that fit how they work: taking a whole-business and whole-family view, starting from a clear baseline, using peer and practical learning alongside one-to-one support, and helping clients make changes that are affordable and achievable.

Who it's for

Business support professionals working with farms, estates and other land-based businesses, and with businesses based in rural areas.

What you need to show

  • S15.1

Take a whole-business and, where relevant, whole-family view of the client, including how the household, the land and the business affect each other

  • S15.2

Establish a clear baseline of the business's position at the outset, using benchmarking against similar businesses where it is available

  • S15.3

Help the client set their own goals and plan changes that are practical, affordable and achievable alongside their working patterns, seasons and capacity

  • S15.4

Help the client assess diversification opportunities (for example tourism, food and drink, renewable energy, property and new land uses), including how they fit with the core business and their planning, licensing, tenancy and tax implications

  • S15.5

Help the client understand and respond to changes in farm and land-use support and regulation

  • S15.6

Help the client assess opportunities in markets for environmental goods and services (for example biodiversity net gain, carbon and nature schemes), including the long-term commitments and risks involved

  • S15.7

Help the client overcome constraints common in rural areas, including digital connectivity, transport, access to markets, planning, energy supply and recruiting and housing staff

  • S15.8

Use peer learning, discussion groups and practical, on-site learning alongside one-to-one support, where these will help the client

  • S15.9

Help the client plan for succession early, including involving the next generation and addressing family and ownership issues

  • S15.10

Help the client find and access rural, sector and general sources of finance and support, and keep in contact to help them maintain progress
